Science-Based Environmental Programs

SERVICES

Northern Environmental Consulting has 30 years of experience in science-based programs to test environmental quality and contaminant concentrations in the local environment.  Projects have included research into the presence and movement of all types of contamination (organochlorine pesticides, metals, radioactivity, hydrocarbons), monitoring program design, statistical analysis and interpretation,  risk analysis, and communication of the results and conclusions to affected communities.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Northern Environmental Consulting has been involved with community-led environmental projects in the north for over 20 years.  The firm has moved from lab and field-based research and publication to addressing community environmental concerns and by supporting surveys of abandoned mines and contaminated sites. These studies were initiated to support remediation which reduced risks to human health and the environment. A large component of the studies was the testing of traditional foods for evidence of contamination from local sources.

CLIENTS

Northern Environmental Consulting has worked with international, federal and territorial governments in Canada, indigenous governments and the private sector on environmental research projects, program reviews and environmental assessments.  The firm has worked directly with funding agencies and as a sub-contractor with major consulting firms.  Northern has been  incorporated since 2010 and has complete insurance coverage.

ABOUT US

Northern Environmental Consulting is a small environmental consulting firm based in Pinawa, Manitoba, the site of Whiteshell Laboratories.  The principal consultant of the firm is Colin Macdonald, M.E.Sc., Ph.D., who has conducted environmental research, surveys and monitoring for 30 years.  Early research was focused on the accumulation of metals and organochlorine pesticides by fish, birds and marine and terrestrial mammals.

After opening Northern Environmental Consulting in 1998, projects included the application of statistical design to environmental monitoring surveys, program review for national and international agencies and working with northern communities to design programs to test the local environment (e.g., water and traditional foods) for evidence of contamination. C. Macdonald is the author of over 60 journal papers and reports and has presented papers and posters at international conferences for 30 years.
